639,425 of these light utility vehicles were produced by Willys and Ford during the war. It was powered by an inline four-cylinder water-cooled engine and had a transfer case giving it four wheel drive capability. Huge numbers of jeeps were also lend-leased to Britain and the Soviet Union. The jeep was utilized as a personnel and material transport, liaison, communications, and command vehicles, ambulances, light weapons platforms for .50 caliber machine guns and the 105 mm recoilless rifle, and as a tow vehicle for the 37 mm anti-tank gun.
